LAST NIGHT'S SCHOOLS' Challenge Quiz 2005 match between St. Andrew High School and The Queen's School ended with as much excitement as a dead leaf falling on the pavement. The Queen's school defeated St. Andrew High 39-14.
The captain of the Queen's team, Nicola Rose, said, "We were banking on experience to get us through the game. We were confident, but not overly confident going into the game. This is our third year coming into the match. We will definately be training harder for the next match, though."
Their coaches, Vivian Cox and Thaddeus Davis, said, "Based on how we prepared for the match they sould have been at 50-odd...they worked under immense pressure, but they worked well, and we would like to congratulate them."
Lagged behind
The first section of the match went fairly swiftly: Queen's lagged behind St. Andrew by one point, ending the segment at nine points to eight. The score was however changed after Queens was given an extra point for a chemistry question, bringing both to the same point standing, nine.
In the second segment, St. Andrew gained seven points, taking them up to 16 points. The only highlight of this section was when they gave the West Indian novelist, Samuel Selvon a Spanish identity. The Queen's girls, however, cooly charged ahead, ending the section with 27 points.
The buzzer section was as competitive as a snail racing, against a horse. While Queens busily answered most of the questions, St. Andrews sat back taking in the action. They, however, wanted to remind us they were still in the running, so they pressed the buzzer; unfortunately they got the answer wrongly. They, however, gained two points, and just before the end of the
section, lost two, ending the match on 14 points, and Queen's with 39.
Gained experience
The captain of the St. Andrew team, Kimberley Blissett, said, "We are okay. We are looking forward to coming back next year. The important thing is that we gained experience. We were not prepared for the music, arts, and sports sections because we are all maths and science students."
Their coach, Phillip Davey, said, "We were hoping for the best. But the level of preparation was not where I wanted it to be, but as competitors we just had to hope for the best."
